Compiling my montage and playlist:
This was a fun exercise to see my growth from being a baby up until now. Choosing who to include and who not to include was also interesting as I subconsciously did not include some family members as I did not see them as being part of my 'immediate' life or part of my journey being mixed-race.
Writing my 12-words:
It felt quite empowering to allow my mind to freely make associations and it was a really interesting exercise to see what I came up with. I particularly liked putting the words into a story after. I would like to do another exercise like this in the future.
Being listened to:
A validating and empowering experience. Everyone in the room was like me which I also found comforting
Seeing my mind-map:
I felt excited and understood. And proud to see my journey captured in such a large impactful medium.
What did unpacking the mind-maps produce:
Clarification on a lot of things that I already had considered but was not sure on.
Immediate benefits:
I felt seen and my thoughts were validated.
Long term benefits:
I have started the process of exploring some of the things discussed in the project (which validated some of my thoughts I already had about myself/my life) within talking therapies
Before and after:
I am really happy that I engaged in the project as I have been able to reflect on my experience as someone who is mixed-race and position my experiences (whether similar or different) to local likeminded individuals.

Feedback
Tia: I was an unemployed single mother when I wrote TWELVE WORDS. Now I'm the manager of Gorsehill Studios, who funds a 12-week 12-words writing course for women.
TC: Inspiring. Powerful. Allows you to make changes. Draw boundaries. Because I’m taking risks which I haven’t taken for years. Caught up in the angst of it all. It’s like having treatment through writing. I’ve been going around in my life ashamed: I’ve been thinking people can see what has happened to me. But how could they see it? How could they know it? This writing therapy is clean, it is not clogged. There are no comebacks. We are looked after. There are no comebacks. I get to look after that kid these things happened to. There is a reward for it. I can leave it, the trauma. I am with kindred spirits. They feed me.
BL: Scared. Apprehensive. Unsure. Unworthy. To becoming. I can do this. I can do this. I have changed so much. For the first time I don’t fidget. I am undiagnosed ADHD; all I could think is what’s gonna happen. I was all over the place. Now I have confidence. More confidence. I have stepped outside of my comfort zone.
DC: I feel well on my way. I understand myself in my writing. Initially it was difficult. But I’ve grown to love it. I now question my job. I enjoy writing so much I want to write all the time. I no longer find hairdressing creative. I do 12-hour days. I just want to write.

Kirsty is transitioning from art director to creative strategist
I started this process with Linda at a pretty unstable time. My main job had just cut my hours, I had no other clients lined up, and my confidence was on the floor. I was busy all day, but I had nothing to show for it.
My own business, the thing that should have mattered most kept falling to the bottom of my priority list. I was overwhelmed, stuck in the day-to-day, and honestly, just trying to keep my head above water.
It only took a few weeks working with Linda to actually start seeing myself as a business owner and a leader.
Working for myself, it was easy to treat my own tasks as optional.
Without anyone to answer to, I struggled with accountability.
I’d push back simple tasks for weeks, mostly out of a hidden fear of rejection, and I had no real grasp on how to manage my own time.
The biggest change came from the consistency of our weekly meet-ups, As a freelancer working solo, it was so easy to let things slide, our get togethers provided me with the external accountability I needed to stop stalling and start taking my own business seriously.
While she won't sugar-coat the truth or suffer fools, Linda’s friendly, non-judgmental approach gave me the safe space to be honest with her, and myself, about where I was struggling, without ever feeling like a failure, and finally helped me get out of my own way by setting:
- Clear objectives and tasks that forced me to be accountable.
- Giving me realistic and achievable approaches, helping me break down the big tasks that used to paralyse me and guided me to breaking down projects into manageable steps.
- Moving from a place of fear to a place of action my time with Linda has given me a boost in confidence and a real sense of self worth.
The difference is night and day.
I’ve moved away from just reacting to what’s in front of me and I’m finally looking forwards with a goal and a plan.
I’m organised, and seeing the benefits of it.
I’m seeing real productivity, and most importantly, I’m feeling confident.
I’m no longer just getting by. I’m actively pitching to new clients and managing my current projects with a level of control I didn't have before.
